Reputable Rankings
Before we start, it’s good practice to check whether the organization ranking corporations is a trusted name or is at least transparent with the metrics used. The last thing any customer wants is to be misled by dubious advertisements.
Corporate Responsibility Magazine, for example, publishes a list of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens every year. It ranks companies based on seven factors, which include employee relations as well as the company’s impact on stakeholders and society.
Employee Relations
The key factor to look at is employee relations. Arguably, a company’s treatment of its employees would extend to its customers, either directly or indirectly. Employees, after all, are the ones that directly interact with customers.
Beyond customer service, the state of a company’s relations with its employees also has an impact on the quality of the product. For example, while the vast majority of manufacturing processes for housing materials, like siding, have been automated, packaging and delivery is still handled by employees. Care must be taken so as to not damage the product, but if an overworked employee doesn’t care about the delivery, the quality of the product will be compromised.
